Recycled/upcycled cable bracelets

My newest project are these recycled/upcycled bracelets made from old cat5 and other miscellaneous cables:

MultiCableBracelet1

MultiCableBracelet2

MultiCableBracelet3

This one I've kept to wear, since there is a little visible nick in one of the white cables. I used new rubber washers, findings and clasps. I'd LOVE to find a solution for a relatively easy to use clasp that is also made of recycled material. I could probably make some continuous style bangles (no clasp) with 100% recycled material. That may be the next step in the evolution of these bracelets!

These two are currently for sale in my shop:

Masonic pendant

Pardon the lazy snapshot photo!

I made this necklace with the intent to sell it, but I think I may keep it. I used some old copper pieces I found in a box of “vintage” stuff. I don’t know how old the parts are. Epoxy was involved in making this thing happen.

It involves too many elements I like for me to sell it: old jewelry parts, a star burst, and masonic imagery.

Trade Beads cluster necklace

I bought some old trade beads back in the summer. They'd been sitting on my beading table that whole time while I figured out what to do with them. They've always been a challenge for me because of their size, color, and bubbly shape.

trades2

I wire wrapped them to a bit of oxidized silver chain and used some black leather to make a simple necklace. I'm really happy with it! So much so that I didn't give the leather any time to rest overnight so it still looks a little wibbly wobbly d:

Macrame Bracelets

It seems macrame has a trendy resurgence every few years. I'm always glad to see it back in style!

I've been working on some simple cotton bracelets with indonesian glass beads and a fabric shank button/loop closure. I'd like to make one long bracelet that wraps around several times, but I need to get more cotton first!

Day of the Dead bracelet and earrings

I put together a leather and brass bracelet and matching earrings with these hand painted day of the dead skull (also called Calacas) beads.
I also was anxious to use these unique earring findings. They're new to me. I love 'em!

Jess Fink necklace

I got this super fun calaca pendant from Jess Fink at SPX.

I added some little lucite flowers, coral and dyed bone and put it on a new chain. Festive!

Cricket Press

I worked as a volunteer at the Small Press Expo this past weekend. It was a BALL - I can't recommend it enough.

The majority of the show is devoted to books, minis, illustration, and other works on paper. There were a few people selling accessories. I couldn't pass up this gorgeous pendant from the Cricket Press table (and proceeded to geek out over wood engraving machines with the lovely lady there).

I think it looks like a little cluster of birdhouses, so I wire wrapped it to a vintage brass chain using a scissortail bird charm and a tiny glass bead. I had to punch a second hole in the little bird, I felt a little bad doing it! Though I don't think it minds :)

Quick rubber chain maille experiment

After seeing those rubber o-ring chain maille bracelets earlier today, I couldn't help but try to make one. It was slow going at first, but I managed to figure out a "helm weave" by looking at a completed bracelet.

I had EXACTLY enough large black rubber o-rings (and some cheapo, kinda ugly base metal jump rings that were a little too big for the project but OH WELL) to cobble together a really simple experiment bracelet. Onward to higher quality and better colors!

Custom laser cut wooden bits

I've tried to make meeples and city tokens into things other than dangley jewelry, but they were just too big and heavy. Or, I was afraid the chunky painted dudes just would not hold up to wear and tear. I want to make more subtle post earrings, cufflinks, and cell phone/zipper dongles.

So, I took a chance and sent some of my own (albeit simple) designs to Ink It Labs. They're based out of Austin and were super quick to reply to all my questions.

I chose the 1" laser cut, 1/8" maple wood, UV coated (no color) option and HOLY COW I LOVE THEM!

They included the cut-out portion that created the negative space, which was a total surprise for me! Look at those teeny tiny cities, oh my goodness!

Look out, people of Earth. You will soon see the most rad-nerdy board game dongles and earrings. Now...To assemble!

Embossing detail

I took more photos of the embossed earrings and pendant in sunlight:
emboss-better-2

emboss-better-1

I'm still lovin' 'em! The downside...now I want to design my own embossing plates. Kinda like I want my own plastic and wood laser cutting machine! Maybe one day I'll have tons of free space, time, and money.

Back here in reality, if anyone is interested in earrings or just the brass elements themselves like these, please let me know! I would be happy to make more.

Crafting Components

I gotta say, I really enjoy making components rather than a Great Big Finished Product sometimes.

Today I made the long brass charms for these earrings. It was satisfying to emboss, hammer, shape, polish and buff a relatively boring piece of metal into something pretty interesting.

LongBrass1

I used some garnet on the tops, there. I should have taken these photos in daylight to better show them off, but I was too impatient (imagine that).

longbrass2
I should take a photo wearing them, they're dang dangly!

I also tried combining the above techniques with letter stamping. I want to revisit it with more time to think about it before trying it out. It has lots of fun potential!

QR code necklace

I'm making a long chain necklace with this locket-esque pendant.

iluqr
I don't scan QR codes (not many people do). BUT, I am really attracted to the idea of having a little secret statement or memory or opinion out on display - and at the same time totally hidden. Unless someone wants to make a little secret effort to find out what you're displaying, but at the same time not at all! I imagine a moment of trying to scan a code without the wearer noticing.

Oh tasty, quiet, snarky curiosities! I love 'em.
