I just finished a request for a custom size knit chicken hat...bok bok! I will always love those silly long legs.

I can't find my old foam head I used to use to photograph hats. Time to thrift around for a new one, oh darn :)

I think I made an improvement to my basic chicken hat.

When I finished it and held it up, I literally BAH-HAH-HAH'd. It's way too funny.

What's new: sock

I finished my second attempt at a sock this week:



It's H-U-G-E. This is the product of the small size instructions on the pattern I used. I swear I used the proper size needles.

I can wear it, but it's big and saggy. I think it'd make a nice second layer sock for the winter...or maybe just a stocking for the fireplace.



I really can't decide if I want to make a second one (this one took many many hours).



But, it would help me finally eliminate my last nagging areas of laddering and gaps.

My first sock had some real issues:



But I have none of that this time around!




For those curious, I used some "self striping" yarn, to make it look all fair isle and impressive (but not really!).

Hopefully without wearing myself out, I plan to have a few knit and/or crocheted items at my booth as well. Can I make enough stock without my hands falling off before the show? Time will tell!

I have this thing for knitted chicken shaped anything. Midwest and rural America has a thing for chicken decor, and I really don't fall into that category at all. I just like me a nice chicken hat once in a while.

"Hat Heads"

A couple of months back, I received a complimentary copy of "HatHeads: 1 Man + 2 Knitting Needles = 50 Fun Hat Designs" by Trond Anfinnsen via a generous give-away from the whip up blog. It contains 50 unique knit hat patterns that mostly employ the fair isle technique, some fun and colorful photography, and some great tips for all knitters from beginner to seasoned (my favorite being the decreasing formula for hats. It's way handy when you feel comfortable enough to work without a pattern. Curious? You should pick up a copy!).





The book was accompanied by...a hat! Made by the author! Too cool.





It took me a while to get a photo on the web of the hat in action, but here it is.

Helmet Style Baby Hat

Last month I made this gender-neutral baby helmet (hat) for a baby shower:





It's a slightly modified pattern, which you can find here or within my ravelry.com profile here.
(I bound off with the contrasting cream color and added the pompom. I probably put pompoms on too many things...I also made a very simple braided cord that I folded in half and held together with an overhand knot at the bottom. I passed the braid through near the bottom of the little ear flaps before I knotted the end. It's kind of a loopy-cordy thing.)

Reusing Vegetable Netting/Bags

I was probably a middle school art teacher in another life, as I often times try to use kitchen refuse for something creatively-minded. I present the most recent re-purposed items:


This once held onions. Now, onion-sized balls of yarn that don't roll around on the floor anymore.


Mesh bag of cherry tomatoes...


Becomes a great expandable sleeve for yarn that pulls from the middle!


I can stick those needles in there on the side when I'm not working on that sock.
